Energy plays a significant role in industrial and economic development of a nation. Industry sector is the largest energy consumer in the world, consuming 30–35% of the total energy of the world. This consumption rate is increasing rapidly every year. It is observed that industries’ demand is higher than the requirement. It’s not because their actual demand is high but because they lack means for optimal utilization of the energy. This also leads to environment threats like global warming and depletion of fossil fuels climate changes.

Hence, to reduce unusual wastage and efficient energy utilization, a proper energy management system is necessary. The main motto of any industry is to produce maximum with minimum input whether it is money, labor, electrical input or fossil fuel. Controlling cost and expenses is the biggest concern. Here energy management comes into the picture. According to the VDI-Guideline 4602 “Energy management is the proactive, organized and systematic coordination of procurement, conversion, distribution and use of energy to meet the requirements, taking into account environmental and economic objectives”. It includes planning and operation of energy produced and consumption for achieving objectives like optimized utilization, cost saving resource conservation and climate protection.

Energy management play a huge role in optimizing enterprise productivity and reducing costs. The typical energy saving for any industry, after implementing basic energy management could be 10–15% of the total consumption.

The major elements of an energy management program are:

  • Know your numbers: What is the total consumption
  • Set your goal: Up to what level you want to achieve energy reduction.
  • Define major consumption units and try to reduce consumption
  • Continuous review and management

Energy Management is an important energy resource that can help meet future energy needs while the nation concurrently develops new and low carbon energy sources.

How energy management is helping KBI spat

At our plant we have two furnaces which are always in continuous operation. We were not implementing any kind of service or system for efficient and optimized production. One day we had some melting job to do but the melting point was lesser than the maximum temperature of the furnace. So there was unusual operation of furnace, hence wastage of heat and electricity. After calculations we realized while controlling this wastage leads to a significant saving in energy as well as cost.

After implementing energy management technology i.e. SmartSense (Ecolibrium Energy), the plant efficiency as well as productivity has increased. The best feature is that one can now observe per day or per hour energy consumption of furnace helping us to reduce odd process cycles. This technology allows us to control the power flow as power is fed to the load as per demand. In other words, now only useful power is fed to furnace- resulting in improved productivity with lesser energy input. Energy management also helps to monitor and optimize electrical parameters like power factor, current, voltage, power etc. It is not only enhancing productivity but also reducing costs and carbon footprint.

Hence, Energy management is the key to saving energy of any organization. Much of the importance of energy saving stems from the global need to save energy — this global need affects energy prices, emissions targets and legislation.

When dealing with the use of Energy, it is mandatory to have Energy management and energy management system. SmartSense helps you get these with consummate ease.
